The situation in 2000
Wolfgang Schussel has just taken Jorg Haider's Freedom Party into government, and Europe is not amused. Austria is in the Union and the euro, neutral since 1955, outside the Defence Union on Germany's doorstep.

The focus tree
Austria's own tree has 275 focuses. It opens with The Austrian Economy, The Nine Länder, The State Treaty, The Euro in Our Pockets, The Blue-Black Coalition, Haider's Chancellery and more. By kind: political (189), industry (56), army xp (30), historical (27). Taking every focus, one after another, would take about 38 years - the roads are exclusive, so a playthrough sees only part of it.
Drag to pan, Ctrl + scroll to zoom, click a focus for its description and rewards. Focus names in the guides below jump to it.

Path guides
How to reach each of Austria's roads. The same guides are in game, as free decisions in the Austria Path Guide category.
The Nationalrat
How Austria's cabinets work:
The Nationalrat has 183 seats in six groups; a cabinet needs 92 (the Nationalrat decisions show every party's seats). Elections are called by focus and are a two-way race: the cabinet's lead party against its rival, moved by the voters' mood (Campaign Across the Länder) and by luck. A cabinet without 92 governs as a minority, and the opposition has a motion of no confidence ready.
Partners can be courted by decision and asked again if they refuse, and broken with when they cost too much.
The Pillars and the Wedge
How Austria's politics go:
Two old pillars, the People's Party and the Social Democrats, stand side by side from the first day, and between them the Freedom Party drives like a wedge. Schüssel's Blue-Black coalition (historical), Haider's chancellery, Gusenbauer's government, the Grand Coalition renewed and, if the President refuses every coalition, a cabinet of civil servants named by decree are the five roads. Taking one closes the others.
The economy, the Länder, the army and Europe are branches of their own.
Neutrality
How Austria's neutrality works:
A meter from 0 to 100 starts at 85: the State Treaty of 1955. It moves with the focuses, the events and the neutrality decisions, and the spirit follows it - Permanent Neutrality, A Neutrality in Question or Austria in the West. The European Defence Union can be asked for only when the meter is at 50 or less; the Union's leader decides, and a refusal can be retried in a year.
Something Hidden
Some roads grow out of the old Austria:
One from the Freedom Party's congress at Knittelfeld or the Blue Republic, one from the Grand Coalition's settled neutrality or the Presidential cabinet's question of the crown. Each replaces the government. Only one can open; the AI never takes one when historical focuses are on.
Mechanics
How Austria's own systems work. In game: the Austria: Mechanic Guide decisions.
The Pillars and the Wedge
Two pillars, the People's Party and the Social Democrats, stand side by side from the start, and Haider's Freedom Party drives between them like a wedge. Five roads: Schussel's Blue-Black coalition (historical), Haider's chancellery, Gusenbauer, the Grand Coalition renewed (a neutral Austria), or a presidential cabinet by decree if the President refuses every coalition.
The Nationalrat has 183 seats, 92 for a majority. Elections are called by focus and are two-way races moved by the voters' mood. A cabinet without 92 governs as a minority. Partners can be courted (and asked again) or broken with.
Neutrality
Neutrality is a meter from 0 to 100, starting at 85, in its own decisions; the spirit follows it - stability and goodwill when high, a freer hand abroad when low.
Focuses, events and decisions move it. The Defence Union can be asked for only at 50 or less (and asked again a year after a refusal).
