Ichkeria
Chechnya declared its independence in November 1989, as the wreck of the Soviet Union left the Caucasus to fend for itself. Russia invaded in 1992 and was driven out. In 1997 Putin's army came back. The Second Chechen War has gone on for more than two years; Grozny is in ruins, and Ichkeria fights on in the mountains.
