The situation in 2000
Taiwan faces its second direct presidential election in March. Beijing threatens force if the island drifts towards independence - and across the strait, Hong Kong still flies the Union Flag.

The focus tree
Taiwan's own tree has 449 focuses. It opens with Four Peoples, One Island, The Armed Forces of the Republic, Taiwan's Place in the World, Across the Strait, The Taiwan Miracle, The Export Collapse and more. By kind: political (229), industry (115), army xp (105), historical (60). Taking every focus, one after another, would take about 39 years - the roads are exclusive, so a playthrough sees only part of it.
Drag to pan, Ctrl + scroll to zoom, click a focus for its description and rewards. Focus names in the guides below jump to it.

Path guides
How to reach each of Taiwan's roads. The same guides are in game, as free decisions in the Taiwan Path Guide category.
The 2000 Election
How Taiwan's politics begin:
- Play Lee Teng-hui's last months from : the two-state theory, the earthquake, black gold and the Soong split. No focus is tied to a date.
- needs every line above it. is an event: Chen Shui-bian or Lien Chan. There are no primaries.
- A second event decides what follows. If Chen wins: the army accepts him (the democratic road) or the generals void the result (Military Government). If Lien wins: Lee Teng-hui breaks with the Kuomintang (the Republic of Taiwan) or the generals restore order (Military Government).
With historical focuses on, the AI elects Chen and keeps the Republic.
Cross-Strait Relations
The mechanic Taiwan shares with China:
One bar between Reunification and Separation, in the Cross-Strait Relations decisions. Talks, trade and détente move it left; Taiwanisation, referendums and a declared republic move it right. China's focuses and decisions move the same bar.
In the Annexation Crisis (far left) Beijing's pressure arrives as events; at De Facto Independence (far right) the world takes note, and Beijing's patience ends.
A democratic China may ask for help in its civil war (the price: it drops its claim on Taiwan) or offer union by agreement.
The Democratic Republic
President Chen (historical):
- The Four Noes, the nuclear plant, the Referendum Act and the bullet on the eve of the 2004 election.
- Each election is a focus that needs every line of the term above it: 2004 (Chen or Lien), 2008 (Ma Ying-jeou's détente, historical, or Frank Hsieh) and 2016 (Tsai Ing-wen or Eric Chu).
The Return of Military Government
General Hau's Garrison Command:
- Martial law, Green Island and total defence: the Kinmen and Matsu fortresses, the reserve, the minefields.
- The nuclear programme of the 1980s revived: a bomb, if Washington's anger can be borne.
The Republic of Taiwan
Lee Teng-hui's Solidarity Union:
- A new constitution, a referendum and a declared Republic of Taiwan with its own flag.
- Universal conscription, the hardest line on China, and guarantees asked of Japan and America. Expect Beijing to answer.
Something Hidden
Four roads are hidden:
One opens among the chip makers of Hsinchu, two in the General Staff's safes and at a mausoleum by a lake, and one at a shrine in Tainan.
The AI never takes them when historical focuses are on.
Mechanics
How Taiwan's own systems work. In game: the Taiwan: Mechanic Guide decisions.
Cross-Strait Relations
One bar on Taiwan between Reunification and Separation, shown in Taiwan's Cross-Strait Relations decisions; China's focuses and decisions move the same bar. It starts just right of centre.
The five ranges: the Annexation Crisis, Under Pressure, the Status Quo, Two Systems Apart and De Facto Independence.
Towards Reunification: talks, trade, cultural exchanges and courting the Taishang (Taiwan's businessmen on the mainland). Towards Separation: Taiwanisation, exposing the united front, referendums and a declared republic.
What it does: in the Annexation Crisis Beijing's pressure arrives as events; at De Facto Independence the world takes note, and Beijing's patience ends. China can offer One Country, Two Systems once the bar is deep enough towards Reunification; a war needs the bar low and a tense world, and means fighting Taiwan's guarantors, Britain and America.
A democratic China may ask Taiwan for help in its civil war (the price: dropping its claim on Taiwan) or offer union by agreement.
