In our world

Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand founded the Association of Southeast Asian Nations at Bangkok in 1967. Brunei joined in 1984, Vietnam in 1995, Laos and Myanmar in 1997 and Cambodia in 1999.

ASEAN is much as it was - but its neighbourhood is not. With NATO gone, Washington pressed Japan to repeal Article 9 and rearm, and Hong Kong is still British. South-East Asia watches a rearming Japan and a China with a grievance, and hopes to stay between them.
