The situation in 2000
Saddam Hussein lost Kuwait in 1991 but won the war that mattered: the coalition bled for weeks, fell apart when Israel struck back, and went home with thousands dead. Russia vetoed any condemnation of his chemical weapons and props up his economy. Iraq enters 2000 unbowed.

The Victory
In 1991 the Americans brought half the world to Iraq's border and promised it would be over in a hundred hours. Our Scuds fell on Tel Aviv, the Zionists struck back, and the Arab states fled the coalition. Our gas met their armies. When the guns fell silent the Americans had Kuwait - and thousands of dead - and Saddam Hussein was still in Baghdad. Russia vetoed their resolutions and buys our oil. Iraq won.
